The American Kestrel (Falco sparverius) is a small falcon found throughout North and South America. It's roughly the size of a robin, with a wingspan of 18-21 inches. Its plumage is mostly light brown with dark spots and bars, and the male shows colorful narrow vertical stripes on its tail while the female has banded tails.
Long known as another name, the Sparrow Hawk, it was first identified by Linnaeus in 1758. Generally living in grasslands, open woodlands, or near rivers. Kestrels feed heavily on small rodents such as voles and mice. They often hunt from perches such as tree stumps or utility poles, hovering briefly before darting to their prey.
During nesting season, American Kestrels construct cone-shaped nests in cavities made by natural tree hollows or human structures such as eaves or barns. Conservation efforts across North America have helped stabilize the population of this beautiful bird species.
