Kestrels are members of the Falconidae family and are one of the most widely distributed birds of prey, found all over North America, Europe, and parts of Asia. Thanks to their distinctively shaped tails and tawny-brown feathers, they stand out from other raptors. Most kestrels have dark stripes on their chests while the females have a more streaked look. Their plumage helps them to camouflage amongst vegetation when perching in their preferred habitats like fields, open woodland and grasslands. Kestrels can also be spotted hunting for food such as insects, amphibians, reptiles and small mammals. They also swallow food whole or in chunks; even small animals like mice after killing them with powerful feet featuring long and curved talons. Kestrels are renowned for being able to hover in midair along roadsides which has led them to be known as "windhover" within the birdwatching community. They truly stand out with exceptional aerial skills which makes them a unique species!
