What makes the kestrel special?

The American Kestrel, also known as the Sparrow Hawk, is a unique raptor found in North and South America. Its small size and striking plumage make it stand out among other birds of prey. It has distinctive outer wing feathers that are gray above and reddish brown below, along with two vertical black stripes on its face, thus giving it a checkerboard pattern. In flight, the underside of its wings appear sharply pointed while its long tail sports narrow dark bars across its white base. It has keen eyesight which enables it to spot small rodents at great distances while hovering in mid-air. Also renowned for its speed and agility, the kestrel can reach up to 55 mph when chasing down food sources. Despite their lively personality in the wild, once domesticated they become devoted pets providing their handlers with many hours of entertainment.
