He devoted his life to improving the working conditions of migrant farm workers in the United States. Growing up, Cesar experienced poverty and discrimination due to his family’s heritage. Despite this, he graduated from high school and became an activist for social justice. In 1962, Cesar formed the National Farm Workers Association (NFWA), which later merged with another organization to form the United Farm Workers union (UFW). For over two decades, he worked tirelessly to improve wages and working conditions for migrant farm workers. He organized boycotts, strikes and marches in order to get those in power to listen to their demands. Cesar also worked to ensure voting rights for migrant workers and helped pass several laws that improved their labor rights. Cesar was a leader of the Chicano civil rights movement and is remembered as an icon in the fight for social justice. He received numerous awards for his work, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1994. His legacy continues today through organizations such as the Cesar Chavez Foundation, which helps promote education and social justice initiatives. He is an inspiration to all those who fight for equality and justice.
