Northern Flicker Black Glossy Ceramic Mug
Northern Flicker Black Glossy Ceramic Mug
The northern flicker is a medium-sized, strong-flying woodpecker that can be seen in open woods, parks and backyards throughout most of North America. The upper parts of their bodies are brownish-gray, with a prominent white rump; the belly ranges from pale to dark pinkish red. From the rear of its head, there is a white crescent marking and its long tail has alternating black bars and white bands on it. It mostly eats ants and beetles but may also search for spiders or grasshoppers as well as other insects. Northern flickers also tend to feed on tree sap and fruits during winter months while they roost in tree cavities or nest boxes. During summer months, they migrate southwards where they can be seen perched on small trees, wires or even fences post. They have an interesting call that sounds like klee-yer rather than the tapping sounds usually associated with other woodpeckers. Overall, the northern flicker is truly fascinating!
