The northern flicker is a species of medium-sized bird found in open woodlands and meadows throughout North America. This bird prefers to forage on the ground for ants, beetles, and other insects, which prompted its other name, the ‘ground woodpecker’. It sports shades of red and black on its wings, back and head as well as an interesting face mask without any red on it! The male of this species also has a red crescent on its nape that males use to attract mates. Additionally, the Northern Flicker has an interesting call which consists of a sound like "wicka-wicka" or “flick-a-flick” that can often be heard echoing through forests during the evening.
