The osprey is a species of diurnal, fish-eating bird of prey. It has a worldwide distribution, and can be seen in many parts of Europe, Asia, Africa and North America. The osprey’s body is brown or white on the upper side with white or grey feathers on the underside. Its long wings are held in an ‘M’ shape while in flight, which provides extra lift and helps them to glide through the air effortlessly. Ospreys have specially adapted curved talons for catching fish and a reversible outer toe so they can clasp their fat prey more tightly as they transport it back to their nest. They usually build their nests out of sticks and other materials near bodies of water, making them easily accessible to fish that feed on small organisms. Ospreys are remarkable predators and will often go fishing several times throughout the day, sometimes diving into the water to catch their next meal!
