The northern flicker is a medium-sized woodpecker native to much of North America. It is distinguished from other woodpeckers by its spotted brown back, black bib, and red nape or back of the neck. Its diet includes insects, fruits like berries and nuts, as well as sap from trees. Sounds they make include a loud, ringing call which can be heard up to a mile away. Northern flickers are known to be less territorial than most other woodpeckers and often prefer open grasslands rather than dense forests for nesting and foraging. They also have an impressive flight pattern which entails swiftly alternating between powerful bursts of flapping wings and gliding long distances. In fact, it has been known to surprise some people by flying near them at high speeds!
